Familiar First is a guided video communication service delivered through the StoryHub platform, helping organisations create calm, reassuring and human-centred video experiences before someone arrives.
For many people, walking into an unfamiliar place can feel overwhelming. This can be especially true when someone is moving into a care setting, starting at a new school or nursery, attending a hospital appointment, accessing SEND support, visiting a new service, or going through an emotional life transition.
A short, familiar video can make a significant difference.
Familiar First helps people see the place, meet the people, understand the process and know what to expect before they arrive. It turns an unknown environment into something more familiar, predictable and reassuring.
Videos can include simple welcome messages, gentle walk-throughs, introductions to key staff, explanations of what will happen on the day, sensory preparation, practical information and friendly reassurance from the people involved.
The aim is not to create polished corporate videos. The aim is to create useful, personal and reassuring communication that helps people feel calmer, more prepared and more confident.
Familiar First can support:
people moving into a care home or supported living setting
families preparing a loved one for a new environment
children starting nursery, school or transition days
pupils with SEND needs who benefit from visual preparation
people attending hospital, clinic or therapy appointments
families accessing emotional, care or support services
anyone who may feel anxious about arriving somewhere unfamiliar
Each Familiar First project is shaped around the setting, the audience and the purpose. The Community Story Hub CIC works with the organisation to plan the videos, identify what people need to know, guide the filming and create content that feels warm, clear and human.
At its heart, Familiar First is about reducing uncertainty.
It helps people feel that when they arrive, the place is not completely new. They have seen it. They have heard from the people there. They have an idea of what will happen. That familiarity can create trust before the first visit even begins.
Ideal for:
Care homes, domiciliary care providers, supported living settings, schools, nurseries, SEND services, hospitals, clinics, therapy services, community support organisations, family support services and organisations supporting people through change or transition.

Place Connection
Voice-led walkthroughs and observational videos that help people become familiar with an environment before they enter it.
Examples may include:
entrance walkthroughs
bedroom or classroom tours
quiet spaces
sensory environments
waiting rooms
lounges and communal spaces
gardens and outdoor areas
arrival routes and orientation videos
Most videos are created using a “place, not face” approach, meaning staff do not need to become presenters or appear heavily on camera.
Simple narration, gentle pacing and familiar surroundings often create the strongest emotional reassurance.
The language, pacing and structure used within Familiar First are intentionally designed to support reassurance and reduce overwhelm.
Story Guides are trained to use calm, orientating and supportive communication throughout the filming process.
For example:
“There’s no rush.”
“We’ll take things one step at a time.”
“This is where people often wait quietly.”
“Some people like to settle in slowly, and that’s absolutely fine.”
“We’ll help you feel comfortable when you arrive.”
“We’re looking forward to welcoming you.”
Small changes in tone, pacing and wording can make a significant difference to how emotionally safe and prepared someone feels.
Many organisations feel pressure to create polished marketing videos or social media content that requires confidence on camera.
Familiar First takes a different approach.
Using the StoryHub platform, organisations are guided step by step to create meaningful video communication using:
guided prompts
gentle narration
natural surroundings
real environments
authentic moments
structured reassurance pathways
No presenter experience is needed.
No performance is expected.
Because the people already delivering care, support and guidance are often the people best placed to create reassurance.
Familiar First simply helps organisations communicate familiarity, trust and emotional preparation through thoughtful, structured video communication.
Familiar First can support:
residential care homes
dementia services
hospitals and healthcare settings
SEND services
autism support organisations
nurseries and schools
supported living services
hospices
funeral directors
wellbeing and counselling services
respite care
day centres
community support organisations
Because when someone can picture where they are going, hear a calm voice and begin to recognise a space before they arrive…
the first step often feels a little less frightening.
