Conversation Conservation

Project Overview

Conversation Conservation was an early community storytelling project delivered during 2023 with groups including The Thursday Club Nantwich and Belong Crewe.

The project created warm, welcoming spaces for people to share memories, stories and reflections through guided conversation. It was an important precursor to the later development of The Community Story Hub CIC and the StoryHub app, helping test how meaningful conversations could be captured, edited, shared and preserved in accessible digital formats.

At its heart, Conversation Conservation was built around a simple idea: that everyday conversations can hold extraordinary value when people are given the time, space and encouragement to share them.

Who it was for

The project was created for older people, people living with or affected by dementia, community members, friends, families and local groups.

It included work with:

The Thursday Club, Nantwich
A community group for people living with dementia and their carers.

Belong, Crewe
A group of care home residents individual audio and video stories were captured and preserved.

The project was designed to be flexible and human-led, giving people the chance to talk with a friend, loved one or supportive conversation partner.

Why it mattered

Many people carry memories that are deeply meaningful but rarely recorded. These might be stories about family, work, friendship, community, place, heritage, humour, challenge or change.

Conversation Conservation mattered because it recognised that these stories do not always emerge through formal interviews. Sometimes they come through gentle conversation, familiar company, photographs, shared prompts and patient listening.

The original project described itself as creating “a warm, welcoming space” for people and organisations to record a digital legacy for the community and loved ones. It also focused on meaningful dialogue, preserving memories for future generations and creating moments of connection through conversation.

For The Community Story Hub, this project became an important learning stage. It showed that people responded to simple prompts, relaxed recording, edited story moments and accessible digital sharing — ideas that would later influence the development of StoryHub.

What we did

The project used guided conversations to help people share memories in a natural, relaxed way.

Participants were invited to sit down, talk, reflect and share stories that mattered to them. Some conversations involved friends or loved ones. Others explored the idea of speaking with a supportive “friendly stranger” where appropriate.

The project included:

Guided storytelling conversations
Audio and video recording
Use of personal photographs and memory prompts
Edited story moments
Audio postcards
Memory card showreels
Early digital archive pages
Participant reflections and creative responses

At The Thursday Club, the project captured a range of conversations, including stories about living in France, motorsport and Italian heritage, the origins of the club, and memories of working life.

What we created

Conversation Conservation created a collection of early digital story assets, including recorded conversations, edited audio moments, video clips and memory-based showreels.

The Thursday Club project included Postcards From The Past, described as audio postcards offering a glimpse into personal memories, and Memory Card Show Reels, which used people’s own photo albums, narration and music to bring memories to life.

The Belong Crewe work included individual audio and video story pages, including examples for Alf, John and Nancy.

The project also helped explore the idea of an online archive for legacy conversations, with shorter “memory bite” style clips and longer recordings preserved for future listening.

The impact

Around 50 people took part across the Conversation Conservation activity in Nantwich and Crewe.

The project gave participants the chance to share memories, revisit important moments, talk about identity and community, and preserve personal stories in a way that could be revisited by others.

It also had a significant developmental impact. Conversation Conservation helped prove that there was value in combining:

Human-led conversation
Simple prompts
Audio and video capture
Edited story moments
Digital preservation
Community-based delivery

The project showed that memory capture could be more than a one-off recording. It could become a shared community asset, a family legacy, a source of connection and a way of recognising people’s lives in their own words.

For The Community Story Hub, Conversation Conservation was one of the stepping stones towards a more structured model of story capture, eventually leading to the development of the StoryHub app and later CIC-led projects such as Every Natter Matters.

What happened next

The learning from Conversation Conservation helped shape the direction of future storytelling work.

It showed the need for a simpler, more scalable way to support guided conversations, organise story prompts, capture consent, preserve recordings and create usable outputs from community sessions.

The project helped inform later developments including:

The StoryHub app
The Memory Makers initiative
Audio postcards and short story clips
Guided prompt-based conversations
Digital memory preservation
Community storytelling pilots
Story Guide training and supported delivery

Conversation Conservation was an early proof of concept. It showed that when people are gently invited to share memories, the result can be more than a recording.

It can become connection.
It can become legacy.
It can become community memory.
